The Fan-Wing Royal Coachman was Ray Bergman’s favorite dry fly pattern through all the years of his books, covering the 20-year period from Just Fishing in 1932, up to the second edition of Trout in 1952. The account of Ray’s actual aversion and repulsion to fan wing drys is detailed in Just Fishing. It makes for very interesting reading. The Fan Wing Royal Coachman was also one of my favorite dry fly patterns when I was young. I caught a lot of fish on them.
