Advanced Classic Wet Flies DVD

Advanced Classic Wet Flies DVD

Don Bastian – author

Ø       Advanced Classic Wet Flies is the follow-up DVD to Tying Classic Wet Flies. This DVD introduces an original, proprietary material-handling method for quill wings and tails. This technique was developed by Don Bastian in January 2005 (after the release of Tying Classic Wet Flies) and was never published anywhere prior to the release of this DVD. This easy-to-learn procedure greatly simplifies the preparation, handling, and construction of wing quill and shoulder strip married and single-section wings and tails, and can be used in any fly tying process requiring quill wings and tails. This new method eliminates left or right confusion, significantly increases efficiency, minimizes material handling, and drastically reduces the difficulties often associated with assembly of wing quills and tails, particularly married sections. On occasion I have humorously called this technique, “Married Wings for Morons.”

Ø       This DVD presents detailed step-by-step information that allows viewers to watch, understand, and learn the methods and techniques required to construct single section and married-wing trout flies that can be displayed in a frame or successfully fished in your favorite waters.

Ø       Advanced Classic Wet Flies features the following patterns:

o         Gold Stork

o         Watson’s Fancy

o         Ferguson

o         Belgrade

o         Sabbatus

o         Silver Doctor

Ø       The Silver Doctor pattern demonstrated in the DVD is Don Bastian’s variation of the wing; using wing quill sections instead of the more difficult and more delicate flank and goose shoulder feather assortment. It was inspired by commercially-tied Silver Doctor wet flies in the Maine Guide Fly Shop.

Ø       The Ferguson introduces married wings using turkey and goose shoulder. The Gold Stork features bronze mallard wings and a golden pheasant tippet tail. Various techniques are presented and detailed in the additional patterns.

Ø       Don Bastian has been tying flies since age 12. He has over 750 flies in the book Forgotten Flies. Classic wet flies are his passion but he is experienced in a wide range of styles and techniques.

Ø       Advanced Classic Wet Flies was released in August 2007 and runs one-hour 52 minutes. (Interesting that it is exactly the same length to the minute as my first DVD). Check these times against other fly tying DVD’s on the market; many are less than or not much longer than one hour.

Ø       In addition to my new wing quill handling technique several other tactical improvements developed since the release of Tying Classic Wet Flies in 2004 are presented.

Ø      Filmed by Bennett-Watt Entertainment in Hi-Def with three cameras as part of their New Hooked on Fly Tying Series DVD’s. This DVD features incredible close-up images throughout the tying sequences. Nothing is left to your imagination. The filming was done by Kelly and Jim Watt, of Issaquah, Washington; both are fly tiers with experience in filming, editing, and producing great fly tying DVD’s.

Cost: $25.00 US plus shipping.

Tying Classic Wet Flies DVD

Don Bastian – author

Ø       Traditional wet flies ruled the waters for most of fly fishing history. For over 100 years the sale of wet flies dominated the commercial market for trout flies. In early America these patterns were used exclusively for Brook Trout, Atlantic Salmon, and Grayling. Wet flies were later used with great success to catch browns, rainbows, and steelhead trout. Classic wet fly patterns are still very effective, yet tying and fishing these flies had begun falling out of fashion in the 1960’s.

Ø       Tying Classic Wet Flies by Don Bastian is the first DVD exclusively devoted to these historic patterns and fly tying techniques.

Ø       During one-hour and 52 minutes running time, Don demonstrates and thoroughly explains detailed techniques for tying quill, waterfowl flank, married, and mixed-wing wet flies with a variety of body materials, multiple hackling techniques, and material-specific tips on the following eight patterns:

o         Gray Hackle Peacock, Cahill, Yellow Sally, Rich Widow, Cupsuptic, Trout Fin, Parmachene Belle, and Professor

Ø       The first seven flies are shown start to finish; the Professor begins with a completed body (components review of patterns previously instructed), and focuses on the selection, preparation, and placement of the wing, giving a very lucid explanation of working with gray mallard flank.

Ø       Instruction in this DVD begins at a basic level with the Gray Hackle Peacock. Technique and difficulty gradually progress through a sequence of patterns increasing the skill level while simultaneously incorporating a broadening range of tying procedures.

Ø       Married-wing techniques are vividly demonstrated with the Trout Fin and Parmachene Belle.

Ø       Don Bastian has 48 years of fly tying experience, including 27 years of fly tying instruction.

Ø       The book Forgotten Flies (2000) by Complete Sportsman features Don’s meticulous reproductions of 499 wet fly patterns from the traditional recipes of Trout (1938 & 1952 – new wet fly patterns), Just Fishing (1932), and With Fly, Plug, and Bait (1947) by the famous fishing author Ray Bergman.

Ø       This DVD was recorded in April 2004 at Triple L Productions in Lambertville, Michigan, through cooperation with Chris Helm, owner of Whitetail Fly Tieing Supplies of Toledo, Ohio.

Ø      Signed copes are available; normally both cover and disc are signed.

Tying Classic Wet Flies DVD - Front Cover

Here are three printed reviews of Tying Classic Wet Flies posted on Amazon.com from people who bought this DVD:

R. E. Dietz:

This is probably the best tying video I’ve ever seen. It’s certainly the only one that I watched repeatedly. Even if you never intend to this style of fly, there’s a lot of technique that’s good to know for other styles. He explains every step along the way, and makes no assumption about what you may or may not already know. He’s an awesome tyer, to boot.

John McCoy: (33 year fly tying veteran)

I’ve owned Don Bastian’s DVD for nearly a year now, and I’ve also had the privilege of attending one of his weekend-long fly tying seminars. I can honestly say that I learned almost as much from the DVD as I did from an entire weekend of sitting and tying flies with him — there’s THAT much good material in the DVD!

Terry Chapman:

Don Bastian’s DVD shows you in clear, easy to follow steps, how to create beautiful wet flies, period! No fancy talk, no assumptions that you know how to do any of the steps beforehand. Don adds plenty of extra tips about effective fly tying and delivers it all in plain English–no hype!

I recommend this DVD for anyone who really wants to learn how to tie wet flies. The skills demonstrated to tie these flies will help you tie thousands of other patterns as well. Bravo!!
