I don’t recall telling you the Neverwas was one of Bergman’s favorite patterns, but of his books, it was introduced in Just Fishing – 1932 – on a plate of a few flies titled “Special Lures” with the footnote: “not commercially available.” Howard Bartholomew of New York loves the Neverwas. He says it’s a great pattern. Some friends of mine took big brown and rainbows on the Bighorn River in Montana several years ago on the Neverwas and a dozen other gaudy flies, all on #8 2x long hooks.
